A young nun-to-be (Silvia Pinal) loses her innocence when her Mother Superior forces her to visit the sleazy uncle (Fernando Rey) who has supported her for years. A remarkable (and controversial) psychological profile by Bunuel. Regarded by many as his best work.

Les Cousins (1958) A followup to Chabrol's 'Le Beau Serge,' also starring Gerard Blain and Jean-Claude Briarly. Two Parisian students - one worldly, the other unsophisticated - both compete for the same girl, ending their once close relationship.

A former resistance fighter (Michel Auclair) and his lover (Cecile Aubry) flee a small village where the inhabitants have condemned their romance. They end up in Paris, where Aubry is forced into prostituion by her brother.

Poison pen letters inflict pain on the inhabitants of a small town. French with English subtitles.

The Wages of Fear (1953)
One of the great suspense thrillers of all time. Unemployed Yves Montand is one of several French expartriots hired to transport a deadly cargo of explosives across rugged Latin American terrain. Remade by William Friedkin as 'Sorcerer,' this film is a real nail biter.

Sergei Eisenstein

Alexander Nevsky (1938)
Eisenstein's epic depiction of Prince Nevsky battling the Teutonic Knights during the 13th Century closely paralleled the Nazis in pre-war Germany. So much so, in fact, that Soviet leaders banned the film after they signed their non-aggression pact with Hitler. The picture remains a favorite with Western audiences and has shown up on many many 'best- films-of-all-time' lists.

Three con men (Richard Basehart, Franco Fabrizi and Broderick Crawford) cheat simple peasants out of their hard earned money in the hopes of bettering their own lives. One of Fellini's best (and most underrated) films.

Two young female roommates talk about attractive young men they have come in contact with recently. They later realize they were talking about the same chap. A charming Godard short featuring a script by Eric Rohmer ('Claire's Knee'). This tape also includes Francois Truffaut's classic short Les Mistons.

Alphaville (1965)
Eddie Constantine stars as super agent Lemmy Caution, seen hunting down a traitorous computer expert. Also with Akim Tamaroff and Anna Karina. The film is interesting on several levels.

Band of Outsiders (1964) Band a Part
Superb crime drama about a group of young people whose 'perfect crime' turns into a tragic nightmare. With Anna Karina and Claude Brasseur.

Breathless (1958) A Bout de Souffle
Revolutionary, influential crime pic has Jean-Paul Belmondo (doing a great Humphrey Bogart bit) on the lam with his American girlfriend (Jean Seberg) after killing a cop. Directed by Godard from a story by Francois Truffaut. Far superior to the 1983 U.S. remake.

Masculine-Feminine (1966)
Jean-Pierre Leaud ('The 400 Blows') meets aspiring singer Chantal Goya. He moves in with the attractive vocalist and her two female roommates, both of whom try to disrupt the relationship.

The Married Woman (1964) Une Femme Mariee
This frequently banned and censored film tells the story of a woman (Macha Meril), her husband (Philippe Leroy) and her lover (Bernard Noel). When Meril becomes pregnant, she doesn't know which man is the father. Godard's artistic depition of the sexual encounters was much imitated in later years.

Alfred Hitchcock

Blackmail (1929)
A woman kills the man who assaulted her and is subsequently blackmailed. Her boyfriend is a policeman who helps cover her tracks. The first British talkie.

The Lady Vanishes (1938)
Terrific suspense story (with a dash of comedy) about a woman (Dame May Whitty) who disappears from a moving train. When a young couple (Michael Redgrave and Margaret Lockwood) resolve to find her, the other passengers deny any knowledge of the woman.

The Lodger (1929)
Hitchcock's first suspense film is a turn-of-the-century thriller about a murderer whose beautiful young victims all bear his calling card. With Marie Ault. Silent.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934)
When a couple witnesses a political murder, their daughter is kidnapped to keep them from talking. With Peter Lorre and Leslie Banks. Far superior to the more widely circulated 1956 remake.

A juryman (Herbert Marshall) is convinced a young woman is innocent of murder. When she's convicted, he sets out to find the true killer. Also with Norah Baring.

Number Seventeen (1932)
A jewel thief (Anne Gray) helps a detective track down her former gang. Featuring a script by Hitchcock.

The Ring (1927)
A young man falls for the pretty employee of a carnival frizefighter. They marry and he turns boxer himself, but the girl decides she prefers her boss and takes his side when the two are matched in the ring. Hitchcock's most acclaimed silent film (after 'The Lodger').

Sabotage (1936) A Woman Alone
On the eve of World War II, a woman becomes suspicious of her theatre manager husband. Based on 'Secret Agent' by Joseph Conrad - with Sylvia Sidney and John Loder.

The 39 Steps (1935)

Four principals tell four very different accounts of a rape/murder. Set in medieval Japan and starring Toshiro Mifune and Machika Kyo. Kurosawa's first International success is both gripping and thought-provoking. Highly recommended.

Sanjuro (1962)
Samurai-for-hire Toshiro Mifune comes to the aid of an inept group of young warriors in this sequel to Yojimbo. Includes the famous scene where Mifune floats white flowers downstream as a signal to attack.

Scandal (1950) Shuban
A young artist (Toshiro Mifune) and a beautiful singer (Yoshiko Yamaguchi) are libeled in a scandal magazine. This tear-jerker was made just before 'Rashomon' but went unreleased in the U.S. for many years.

Yojimbo (1961) The Bodyguard
Toshiro Mifune stars as a samurai-for-hire in a plot later borrowed for 'A Fistful of Dollars.' Two opposing factions try to solicit his services and both end up paying a heavy price.

Dr. Mabuse makes a killing in the stock market (through devious means of course), then disguises himself and heads for a gambling house to increase his loot. Starring Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Alfred Abel and Bernhard Goetzke. Silent.

House By the River (1950)
Louis Hayward accidently kills his maid while trying to seduce her, and enlists the aid of his crippled brother (Lee Bowman) to dispose of her body. Bowman is blamed for her death when the corpse washes ashore later. Also with Jane Wyatt and Dorothy Patrick.

Kriemhild's Revenge (1924)
Second in director Fritz Lang's Die Nibelungen trilogy (see also 'Siegfried'). Margarethe Schon stars as the hero's widow - who continues to fight for justice. Also with Theodor Loos (as King Gunther) and Hands Carl Muller.

The charming fantasy film that inspired 'Carousel.' Lang's original French version (sorry, no subtitles).

Peter Lorre in the role that made him a star. He plays the pathetic child murderer hunted by both the police and the Berlin underworld in this gripping drama.

Metropolis (1926)
Lang's engrossing sci-fi fantasy about a mechanized city of the future. When the lower class threatens to revolt, a scientist creates a robot in the image of one of their leaders. Terrific art design and special effects have yet to be surpassed. Silent.

Two Nights with Cleopatra (1954)
Mark Antony has been away for a long time and the exotic Cleopatra (Loren) is feeling amorous. She's been working her way through the honor guard - spending a night with each one and having them killed afterward. Later, Cleo's innocent twin causes more trouble in this bawdy romp.

Two Women (1961)
Loren won the Academy Award for her terrific portrayal of a mother who does anything and everything to protect her daughter during WWII. Directed by Vittorio DeSica.
